Hello everyone.
Just a couple of simple questions I hope to get some help answering.
Firstly, I've been having a lot of trouble with my laptop. It's an ABS Mayhem G1, 1GB DDR SDRAM, 60GB 7200RPM HD, 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4, Radeon 9600M Graphics Card, etc. and so forth. Anyways, awhile back (six or seven months ago) I began having serious problems -- my device manager no longer displayed that I had any devices connected, event viewer revealed that several of the startup .dll's failed to run on startup, etc. I called ABS tech support, and they couldn't figure out what was going on. In the end we had to restore the laptop to its factory defaults, erasing my hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP.
Presently, my system has begun to act up again. Every time I try to run Windows, even in Safe Mode, I receive a Stop Error 0x0000007E Bluescreen right as Windows XP Home begins to display its startup screen. Once again, ABS tech support has been little help. I've been told from other reliable sources (local computer repair/support) that I have two other options to try: Updating the System BIOS, and a Windows Repair. Here are my questions --
1. I was told to load the BIOS updates onto a floppy, and then boot my laptop from that floppy. How exactly do I do this (boot from a floppy?)?
2. There are several BIOS updates for my chosen laptop. Should I just download the latest one onto a diskette, or do I have to install them all in order, starting with the earliest?
3. I've been told two different things about Windows Repair: One is that it will leave my programs alone, but will delete everything in My Document folder; the second says that nothing on my hard drive will be touched. Which is it? I'm a little tired of losing data I've worked hard to find or create.
4. Any other suggestions on how I might address this problem?
Thanks everyone for your help.
